here I am in this dang bed...

April 29, 2002

The past week and a half has been spent:

1.) Going to the doctor for allergy medication and possible answers for the persistent abdominal pain. Ten days later, I have no allergy medication and inconclusive test results. Helpful.

2.) Purchasing DVDs. Because really, who doesn't need The Ten Commandments, Half Baked, MST3K's The Wild, Wild World of Batwoman, Beavis and Butthead Do America and a bargain bin copy of The Birth of a Nation? I considered getting Requiem For a Dream solely to watch the "making of" stuff, but decided that was more of rentin' activity (even though that movie beautifully compliments Half Baked). Also, I'm not planning to join the KKK, despite their ever so historically accurate portrayal in Birth of a Nation.

We have the dorkiest DVD collection ever. If someone breaks into our house, they'll laugh at us while they steal our crap. They may break some stuff, too, if that's how they operate.

3.) Watching the Cardinals lose. Their injured list was looking like the Blues in early 2001 for a few days there. I have not received a response on my offer to personally care for Bud Smith while his shoulder hurts.

4.) Watching the Blues kick ass and take names. I'm still not expecting them to make it past the second round, but Brent Johnson sure shut people up about the Blues' need for a real goal tender.

5.) Sleeping. Amazing how much better I sleep when I can turn on the air conditioning. I haven't been able to use it the past few days, but I'm looking forward to the heat now.

That's about it.

Saturday was "Kids' Opening Day" at Busch Stadium. I always seem to end up at that game. It's worth it when there's a guy dressed up in an Oreo suit wandering around the infield, but that was not the case this time around. All we got was Ronald McDonald throwing out the first pitch and an ice cream sandwich eating contest.

The game itself was the most uneventful I've been to in years. The Cardinals won two-to-one over the Astros after stranding somewhere in the neighborhood of sixteen runners. On the plus side, the weather was about perfect - lower sixties, overcast. We abandoned our bleacher seats for slightly more comfortable real ones along the first base line in the upper deck. I found a dime during our post-game scrounging of the stadium.

On our way home from St. Louis, we ran across a fire in what looked like a farm equipment storage facility. The smoke spanned several miles, and flames were still spitting out of the building as we slowly passed it behind the people who wanted to gawk and inhale a little smoke. I was hugely relieved that it wasn't someone's house, but that had to have destroyed anything that was in the building.

Today was hot, as was yesterday. I am not ready for mid-to-upper eighties. Get your ass in gear, rain.

The Pirates are sitting in first place in the NL Central. Ha, ha. I hope they're soaking in the sun while they can - it's so obviously all about the Brewers in that division. I'm thinking it'll go: Brewers, Astros, Reds, Cardinals, Cubs, Pirates. And then we'll see the epic Brewers-Tigers World Series. Ooh, baby. Maybe Brewers-Rangers, if A-Rod can break out of that .055 batting average and buy me a few cases of the Sweet Spot.

So, anyway, I was thinking I might start a Crusade earlier, because there wasn't much on TV and I have some new-ish shoes. But Father was out entertaining some clients, and he took the limo, and I was waiting for my heroine bill from last month to be delivered by ChiTown and Big Eddie, so I've decided to hold off. I bought a village in Vermont instead. It's excessively quaint. I may spend a few weeks there this fall.

Yeah.... I made microwave popcorn and switched between hockey and baseball all evening. Probably better than shooting up and fighting for the Glory of Our Lord, when you get right down to it. And almost all of the teams I was hoping would lose did. Great day, really. I don't regret passing up that opportunity to watch other people get their hair cut at all.

Opening Day. I was a little too enthusiastic.

"It's the first pitch of the season!"
"It's the first RBI double of the season!"
"It's the first souvenir foul ball of the season!"

And so on. That got old around the third inning. I would be the most gratingly annoying announcer ever, and then I would get fired.

"It's good that they have that five run lead, because now a grand slam won't tie it...."
